Tyrone, NY — A cherished landmark in the Finger Lakes region is poised for renewal, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated nonprofit and an upcoming community fundraiser.
The Friends of Weston Schoolhouse have announced a four-day Antique and Vintage Yard Sale, set to take place from Thursday, August 14 through Sunday, August 17, on the grounds of the historic one-room Weston Schoolhouse along County Road 23. The event will coincide with the Waneta Lake Community Yard Sales, inviting residents and visitors alike to browse unique items while supporting a local preservation effort.
Organizers are currently seeking donations of clean, undamaged goods, including jewelry, vintage clothing, furniture, pottery, home décor, lighting, art, books, hunting and fishing gear, recreational equipment, and boats. The Weston Schoolhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is in the process of being transferred to the nonprofit group by the Town of Tyrone. The Friends of Weston Schoolhouse are spearheading a restoration project fueled by financial donations, volunteer labor, and material contributions.
Several local businesses have already stepped forward in support: Finger Lakes Metal provided a new roof at no cost, Knapp & Schlappi donated lumber, and Bruder Brothers Construction contributed half the labor for recent repairs. Despite these early successes, significant work remains—particularly on the building’s foundation and its aging north wall.
Looking ahead, the group envisions the revitalized schoolhouse serving as both a historical site and a vibrant community hub. Proposed uses for the space include hosting book clubs, birdwatching gatherings, scout meetings, and various local events.
Membership in the Friends of Weston Schoolhouse is open to the public for an annual fee of $10.
