BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ranee McConnell’s passion for antiques began as a child when she and her mother spent hours “junkin” at flea markets, auctions, and antique shops. That early love for uncovering hidden treasures has blossomed into a thriving business—Vintage Souls Antique Market, now celebrating its second anniversary.
In 2023, McConnell was working in a high-stress position at the Indiana Department of Child Services when she decided to take a leap into a new chapter of her life. Inspired by her mother, who had owned antique booths and ran a shop in Ellettsville, McConnell envisioned creating her own antique store. The idea took root when her husband, Rob, mentioned a building for lease near their home. Without hesitation, McConnell called the realtor, rented the space, and soon launched Vintage Souls Antique Market.
“We spent evenings preparing for this journey, and I posted on Facebook, hoping that vendors and customers would come. And they did,” McConnell recalled. The shop, which opened its doors on March 10, 2023, has flourished ever since.
Vintage Souls Antique Market is home to 54 vendors, including the original 13 who started with the shop. Despite the shop’s success, McConnell has a waitlist of about 60 people eager to secure a booth space. “Almost daily, I get inquiries from people wanting a booth,” she said. “I think antique shops will always have a place. They bring back memories and offer a sustainable way to repurpose items.”
The store offers a diverse selection of items, including furniture, home décor, vintage jewelry, books, and unique collectibles. McConnell plans to introduce a small clothing line, Easel, featuring tops, sweatshirts, and jeans, further expanding the market’s appeal.
In addition to the physical storefront, Vintage Souls also hosts a “live” market on the third Tuesday of each month, where customers can shop remotely. The live sessions, held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., highlight select booths, and viewers can comment “Sold” on items they want to purchase, with 48 hours to pay and pick them up. The virtual sales have become a popular feature, allowing people to shop from the comfort of their homes.
McConnell finds it rewarding to witness the emotional connections customers have with antiques. One memorable sale involved a vintage metal TAB soda sign from the 1970s. Initially unsure about its appeal, McConnell was amazed when it sold to a customer who had fond memories of drinking TAB and wanted to display it in her home.
The market also attracts younger shoppers, including Indiana University students who are particularly interested in vintage items from the ’70s and ’80s. McConnell is encouraged to see younger generations embracing the value of repurposing items and appreciating the past.
Family plays an integral role in McConnell’s business. Her daughter, Alyssa, has a booth at Vintage Souls, continuing a family tradition of treasure hunting. McConnell also credits her husband, Rob, a Realtor and auctioneer, for his unwavering support. “Owning this shop has been a great fit, especially with Rob’s auctions feeding into the business,” McConnell said.
Reflecting on her journey, McConnell expressed satisfaction with her career shift. Although she once dreamed of working in fashion merchandising, she now finds fulfillment in the antique business. “Things work out the way they should,” she noted, adding that the shop has introduced her to many wonderful people who have become lifelong friends.
Vintage Souls Antique Market’s success is a testament to McConnell’s passion and dedication. “It’s been a great pleasure meeting so many wonderful people, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this space with them,” she said.
