Long-Established Stow Antique Business Relocates as Founders Step Back

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD – After nearly 50 years in business, Baggott Church Street Ltd, a well-known antique dealer in Stow, is relocating as its founders transition into a less active role. The shop will move from its current location on Church Street to Huntman’s Yard in Sheep Street, with ownership passing to the founders’ son, Henry Baggott.

The business, originally established in 1976 in Stow’s Market Square before relocating to Church Street, has been a fixture in the town’s antique scene. Jack and Chrissie Baggott, the long-time owners, have decided that now is the right time to step back, though they are not retiring completely.

“We’ve had premises at Huntman’s Yard in Sheep Street for quite some time, and we’ve decided to move the business there,” said Chrissie Baggott. “After nearly five decades of running the shop, we feel it’s time to wind down a little.”

Henry Baggott, already an experienced dealer, will take the lead in the business, while his parents remain involved. “Dealers tend not to retire—it’s more of a lifestyle because there’s always something to buy and sell,” Chrissie added.

The Church Street property has been placed on the market, and the transition to the new location will be completed once the sale is finalized.

Reflecting on the shift, Mrs. Baggott acknowledged the significance of maintaining a physical store despite the digital age. “Many customers prefer shopping in person because online platforms lack that personal touch,” she said. “It’s going to be a big change, but we’re looking forward to it. With Henry taking the helm, there won’t be as much pressure on us.”

Baggott Church Street Ltd has been one of the longest-standing businesses in Stow, playing a key role in the town’s development as a renowned hub for antique shopping since the 1970s.

“Stow remains a vibrant place, filled with independent shops, which is wonderful to see,” Mrs. Baggott remarked. “We’ve had a lot of heartfelt messages from locals, with many saying the High Street won’t be the same without us.”

As the transition unfolds, the Baggotts are optimistic about the future, confident that Henry will continue the family’s legacy in Stow’s thriving antique trade.
